The Commons has 13 locations across Melbourne and Sydney featuring sister brands, Central House and Forum.
The Commons concept originated in Melbourne through the collaboration of two Australian schoolmates, Cliff and Tom. Driven by a shared vision to revolutionise the way Australians work, prioritise workplace happiness, and redefine the office experience, they meticulously crafted a space that harmoniously blends the flexibility of modern work styles with the needs of the contemporary individual.
In 2016, the inaugural location in Collingwood, Melbourne, emerged from the creative hands of the founders. Utilising empty shipping containers and simple materials, they introduced shared workspaces and welcomed their first members. The following year, in 2017, The Commons expanded to South Melbourne, renowned for its chic boutiques, cafés, and restaurants.
2019 marked a significant milestone. It established their first Melbourne CBD location and ventured into Sydney with The Commons Chippendale. Recognising its responsibility towards the environment, The Commons made strides by investing in renewable energy to offset carbon emissions across their four locations.
Despite the challenges of 2020, The Commons persevered and unveiled its largest Melbourne location in Cremorne, a thriving tech hub. Simultaneously, it embraced adaptability and resilience in supporting their team and members through unprecedented times.
In 2021, The Commons introduced their sister brand, Central House, in collaboration with APSO and Deague Group, catering to professionals seeking a tailored workspace experience. This year also witnessed the launch of our South Yarra location, alongside achieving B Corp and Great Place to Work certifications.
The year 2022 marked substantial growth as they expanded their footprint in Sydney with The Commons George Street and Surry Hills. Accompanied by Canteen by The Commons, it ventured into hospitality to better serve our members. Additionally, the Collingwood location transformed into The Commons Wellington Street, designed by Flack Studio, welcoming over 3500 new members, and doubling its team.
In 2023, they unveiled Canteen by The Commons in Melbourne’s Wellington Street location, offering a unique dining and reading experience. Meanwhile, Central House extended its reach with Central House Toorak, catering to prestigious neighbourhoods and providing additional workspaces for its members.
As the journey continues, The Commons and its sister brands evolve, steadfast in our commitment to redefining workspaces and fostering community-driven environments.
Big plans are in place for 2024, with the launch of another new location, 55 Collins Street, in the heart of the “Paris End” of Melbourne’s CBD. Having taken 4 floors, it will create a huge presence in the coworking space. This will also coincide with the opening of Forum, a lux hotel feels coworking centre in central Cremorne.
